baked, finally

After what seems like countless zipcar cancellations and snow storm-causing train delays, I finally made it to Baked, the bakery in Red Hook, Brooklyn I’ve been going on about (remember those peanut butter crispy bars and yummy brownies?). To say that it was the farthest I’ve traveled for a dessert doesn’t even cover it. My friend Brianna, who always seems to accompany me on my food explorations with no objections, met me at my apartment and from there we took two trains to a bus to another bus (we got on the wrong bus, of course, and had to wait for a 3rd- not that anyone’s counting) to get to the Bakery. It was very likely we had crossed a border somewhere in the midst of the many turns that were made at all of the foreign-sounding streets, but I needed my cake.
All in all I would guestimate about an hour and a half for the going-part of the trip. Now that’s dedication, innit? When we got there, I was snapping away with my camera and Brianna ordered a piece of the red velvet cake that we shared. It was tasty but not to die for- the frosting had a hint of cinnamon that threw me off, as I’m a real classic frosting lover- she agreed. One chocolate “steamer” later, and I packed my bag with a chocolate-peanut butter cupcake (of course), and a sweet and salty brownie.
The brownie was just perfect. It was incredibly moist and fudgy (and I really mean it; I ate it on a plate with a fork), with a kick from the fleur de sel and a hint of caramel that really made it just phenomenal.  I had my heart set on getting a slice of sweet and salty cake or the malt ball cake, neither of which were available when we went there (it’s a good thing I have that cookbook). So, the trip. Was it worth it? I have to say it was (especially for those brownies), unless you have the cookbook at home so you can at least make your own. No pressure.

    Hi there Emily!

My name is Steve Walters and I recently started blogging at http://www.eatingbangkok.com, which is currently being updated with recipes, but in the next few months will be my vehicle for covering the food and restaurant scene in Bangkok Thailand.

I am now in the process of meeting as many food bloggers as I can and I found your site http://emilyspieceofcake.com recently and was pretty impressed. I’ve added your site to my Foodie Blogs list here: http://www.eatingbangkok.com/foodie-blogs/ and would also like to add you to my blogroll.

If you could add my site to your blogroll and write back to let me know it has been added I will add you to mine as well and the exchange would be greatly appreciated!

As you might imagine I am very excited to get moved to Bangkok and get started on covering the food scene there as I feel it is an area that isn’t well covered by English speaking bloggers. I plan on adding loads of great reviews, pictures and even video and will be holding contests as well. It should be fun, entertaining and informative for everyone that visits.

Thank you so much in advance for adding me to your blogroll and I look forward to reading your posts (I’ve subscribed!) and maybe even featuring some of your own posts as I do plan on a weekly roundup of Thai themed recipes and posts from other food bloggers.

    Warm regards,
    Steve
