elvis presley’s hot peanut butter banana sandwich

Did you know that Saturday was World Nutella Day? Yep, February 5th- it’s a real thing. I know you’re probably a little disappointed- maybe you were looking for nutella and you got peanut butter. But see, I’ve lost my nutella privileges.

There’s a reason there’s no jar of hazelnut-chocolate goodness in my kitchen, because every time there is, I always find myself in the kitchen devouring the whole jar, and get caught by my mom mid-spoonful. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course- I’ve always grown up in an “it’s okay to eat nutella form the jar” household”. As soon as I cave in to chocolately-hazelnut goodness, you’ll be the first to know. You shouldn’t have to wait long.

No, It’s not Elvis Presley’s birthday or anything of the sort, but for these cold, bitter days that beckon you into your houses, this sandwich is perfect- what’s more comforting than warm, creamy peanut butter? And it only takes a few minutes to prepare, so you really don’t have any excuses not to make this one. Just make sure you don’t drizzle some honey, or put some chocolate chips inside to get all melty and sweet and delicious, because that would just make it terrible, wouldn’t you say?

Elvis Presley’s Hot Peanut Butter Banana Sandwich
from Gourmet
2 tablespoons peanut butter (preferably smooth)
2 slices white sandwich bread
1 small ripe banana, mashed with a fork (about 1/4 cup)
2 tablespoons butter
Spread peanut butter evenly on 1 slice of bread, then spread mashed banana on other slice, leaving a 1/4-inch border around edge. Close sandwich, gently pressing bread slices together.
Heat butter in an 8- to 10-inch heavy skillet over moderate heat until foam subsides, then fry sandwich, turning over once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes total.
Eat immediately with a knife and fork (or, you know, with your hands).
